We’re Back Online ~ Avoid RegisterFly!

February 22, 2007 | posted by Scott |

After a few stressful days of being AWOL, our website is back online. It turns out the problem was with the registrar we used to register the domain name–although we paid (several times) for the renewal of the registration, RegisterFly did not process the renewal and the registration expired. Fortunately, despite the current mess at RegisterFly, we managed to get the domain transfered to eNom and get back online. Many others have not been so fortunate. (Read more to find out about the RegisterFly mess.)

Although RegisterFly is ICANN an accredited domain registrar, that credential has not protected their customers at all. We were fortunate that we only had the one domain name expire–there are stories of many people having multiple domain registrations expire, some resulting in significant problems for their livelihoods. As I understand it, some of those have had to pay significantly higher than normal fees to get them back, and others have even lost their domains as they ended up being sold to third parties. It appears that whoever was in control at RegisterFly (the finger has been pointed at one Kevin Medina, former CEO), was taking customer’s money and not processing registrations and renewals.

So, if you’re planning to register a new domain name, I would recommend you avoid RegisterFly (although not meant as an endorsement, I have domains registered through GoDaddy.com and eNom.com - so far they both seem good). If you’d like to learn more about this story, you can visit Registerflies or just Google RegisterFly.
