Keynote/Powerpoint Presentations

August 3, 2007 | posted by Scott |

I’ve been working on putting together a presentation to introduce people to the Projective Differential™, and thought I’d share some of the resources I’ve found on creating effective presentations. Whether you’re presenting an idea or “pitch” in business, presenting your research at a conference, or using presentation software in teaching a class, you’ll want to make sure your presentation is compelling and effective, leveraging the power of the technology that’s available, while not going so far as to be all sizzle and no steak! Hopefully, you’ll find some of these resources helpful.

Beyond Bullet Points by Cliff Atkinson is a great book that guides you through the process of creating a presentation using a story format, ala a Hollywood script. Although written for users of Powerpoint, it’s equally useful for those of us who prefer to use Apple’s Keynote presentation software on our Macs. You may also want to check out his site SociableMedia.com for additional information, tips, and a user forum.

Presentation Zen is a blog dedicated to providing information, tips, ideas, etc. about creating good, compelling presentations.

Presentation Zen author Garr Reynolds has also created a presentations tips area on his personal site.

Guy Kawasaki’s 10/20/30 Rule of Powerpoint suggests that a Powerpoint presentation should have no more than 10 slides, last no more than 20 minutes, and contain no fonts smaller than 30 points:

For those of you who, like me, use Keynote, here are some sites that have created and sell some pretty nice Keynote themes:

Do you have some good presentation resources? Leave a comment and let us and our readers know!

    HI Scott,
Great addition. This is a great resource for anyone wanting to give a presentation. I was reminded of the article you told me about a while ago comparing Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. It is located Presentation Zen - here is the link:

    http://www.presentationzen.com/presentationzen/2005/11/the_zen_estheti.html

It gives a good visual of two different types of presentation.

For some reason the iTube embed isn’t giving sound. Is it just my connection or is there a problem with iTube?

The video sound is working for me… perhaps if you replace the “i” with “You” the video will work. ;)

Or, check that your computer speakers are on/turned up and you don’t have headphones plugged in.

Or, maybe there was a YouTube issue at the time you were trying it.

I went to “you”tube and I think it has something to do with my Firefox interface on my G3 laptop. None of the videos have audio for me. However, on my desktop the youtube embed above works great.

So, for those of you reading, if the above doesn’t work, try a different browser or another computer.

    Cheers. :)
